Join Mr Alfred Buckland and his friends and staff at home for a day of family fun for all ages. From kitchen to drawing room, Highwic buzzes with activity and special guests.
Music in the ballroom, parlour party, play tennis or croquet, try your luck at the coconut shy and more (some options may be subject to weather). The cook and laundry maid will be hard at work in the kitchen and at the coal range with cooking.
Take tea in the billiard room or bring your own picnic and relax in Highwic's historic garden.
Programme
- Costume: All staff in costume. Visitors are encouraged come along in costume too. A Highwic staff member, probabaly in a character role, will be on hand at all times to conduct house tours or introduce the house and family in the information room.
- Children’s Games: 11.00 a.m. Outdoor games including sack races, egg and spoon races, 3 legged races, coconut shy, stick games, skipping.
- Parlour party in the ballroom, 2.00 pm. Games include ‘Hunt the Thimble’, ‘Musical Cushions’, ‘Animal Lotto’ and many more.
- During the day stilts, quoits, petanque and bowls for all ages.
- Kitchen and Laundry: Washing using the washboard and mangle in the courtyard. Ironing demonstrations in the kitchen. Rolling dough and cookie cutting just outside the kitchen.
- House and Garden Hunt: Children can choose between an outdoor or indoor hunt to find places to play and Victorian objects respectively.
- Tennis and Croquet: Starting after the outdoor games programme. Everyone can have a shot.
- Morning and afternoon teas: Starting at 11.00 a.m. and finishing at 3.30 p.m. Tea, coffee and cold drinks, pikelets and sandwiches served in the Billiard House. Picnic rugs available from the Billiard House (sign-out system).
Free for kids - normal adult entry applies.
Don’t forget, every Thursday is 'Coal on the Range' day when Pauline is on hand to demonstrate the mysteries of ironing with the flat irons and goffering tongs.
