Alexandra Redoubt

Alexandra East Redoubt

One of the best preserved earthworks of the New Zealand Wars, Alexandra Redoubt was one of a chain of fortifications built between Auckland and the Waikato.  This redoubt was built by the Armed Constabulary when Pirongia was garrisoned during the Te Kooti campaigns.

Originally constructed in 1869 and rebuilt three years later, the redoubt placated settler concern at the proximity (2km south) of Whatiwhatihoe, the settlement of the Maori King, Tawhiao. It was intended as a place of refuge for local families.

The high earth walls and trenches – there is still a full two metres from the ditch floor to the top of the bank (escarpment) – protected a blockhouse and flagstaff. It is easier here than anywhere else to appreciate how redoubts were built.

Alexandra Redoubt was never attacked, but the Armed Constabulary continued to guard it till 1886 when it was abandoned.

A church later occupied the site from 1900 till 1959.
